Westbere Lakes -Sailing

Westbere lakes is where Hilary Lister trained. She is the quadriplegic sailor who officially opened Meadowfield school and she is a fantastic inspiration. Hilary was the first disabled woman to sail solo  around Britain and she accomplished this in 2009  by using sip-and-puff technology for steering.

M2 were fortunate to be given the opportunity to go sailing at Westbere lakes in Canterbury on Friday 13th May. The date alone made me feel slightly apprehensive, but I needn’t have worried - everything went perfectly! The weather was sunny and fine- with a few gusts to help the boats along.

Many of our pupils had never been sailing before and, although a little daunted, took up the challenge willingly. They were able to steer the boats or, if they preferred, were able to sit back and enjoy the experience. The boats went fairly fast when the wind picked up, and most pupils found this exciting. One group ran aground for about 5 minutes, but it was all part of the adventure and they were pulled out very promptly!

The volunteers at the lake were extremely helpful and taught our pupils some basic sailing terminology as well as providing them with this fantastic opportunity.
