Meadowfield

Kent Literacy Award Winners 2017

Last night at the Kent Literacy Awards, our Primary Department was recognised for Most Effective Approach to Improving Literacy in the Swale Area.

Meadowfield School cater for pupils with profound, severe and complex special needs. Some of whom have low level reading ability, low attention skills, and struggle to comprehend or recall stories in book form or animation. To support these pupils, the school have introduced the ‘Symbol Reading Books’ initiative. Each week, the school use a special programme to create a story that is linked to the thematic curriculum. It is produced in the form of a symbol-supported reading book. Symbols are images that represent words and help pupils visualise the meaning of vocabulary. Templates within the programme allow staff to quickly create books, flashcards, games, and rewards. The initiative has improved behaviour and motivation, enabled access to the curriculum and learning, but most significantly, provided strategies to enable students to demonstrate what they know.
