Owls class is a KS2 class with 7 pupils, each with a range of complex needs.  This class follows a specialised curriculum focussing on five key skill areas. These are: Communication, Cognitive Skills, Environmental Control Technology, Physical Skills (Gross and Fine Motor) and Social and Emotional Well Being, to ensure that all pupils needs are met. These five key skill areas are broken down into smaller, smarter objectives and targets which the pupils focus on. The IMPACTS curriculum values and recognises the importance of ‘learning via ongoing routines’ such as feeding regimes and personal care. Therefore, learning is always taking place throughout the school day.

Owls class offers a total communication approach to learning. This means that signing, symbols, on-body signing, visual/auditory prompts and gestures will be used as part of our daily routine.

The classroom is zoned to ensure that pupil learning will be maximised. This has been achieved through having a Focus Pod, Eye Gaze learning area, Physical area as well as a Sensory, Communication and Reading area. These areas are designed to offer a quiet and calm learning environment where pupils with a range of sensory impairments can work in a distraction free area. Pupils in this class take extra time to filter and interpret the information they receive through their senses. Therefore, by having these areas, our pupils are able to work on their personalised targets in an environment that supports their senses rather than be in direct competition with them.

As a team, we work very closely with other agencies such as the Specialist Teaching Service for Visual and Hearing Impairment, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapists as well as medical professionals.  All targets and interventions are fully integrated into our daily routines whilst in school.

Developing the whole pupil is paramount and is at the heart of our classroom.
