Sapphire class has 7 pupils, each with a range of complex needs. This class follows a specialised curriculum focusing on six key skill areas. These are: Communication, Cognitive Skills, Physical Skills (Gross and Fine Motor), Environmental Control Technology, Social and Emotional Well Being and Engagement, to ensure that all pupils needs are met. These six key skill areas are broken down into smaller, smarter objectives and targets which the pupils focus on. The IMPACTS curriculum values and recognises the importance of ‘learning via ongoing routines’ such as feeding regimes and personal care. Therefore, learning is always taking place throughout the school day.

Sapphire class offers a total communication approach to learning. This means that signing, symbols, on-body signing, visual/auditory prompts and gestures will be used as part of our daily routine.

There are different sections within the classroom to allow maximum learning opportunities. These include an Eye-Gaze area, Physical and Floor area, Sensory, Communication, Reading and a Focus area. By having these areas, our pupils are able to work on their personalised targets in an environment that supports their senses and develops their skills in all areas of learning.

These areas are designed to offer a quiet and calm learning environment where pupils with a range of sensory impairments can work in a distraction-free area. Pupils in this class take extra time to filter and interpret the information they receive through their senses and life skills.

As a team, we work very closely with other agencies such as the Specialist Teaching Service for Visual and Hearing Impairment, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapists as well as medical professionals. All targets and interventions are fully integrated into our daily routines whilst in school.

We have topics which we follow for a seasonal term. This term our topic is ‘The Imaginary World’ therefore Sapphire’s will focus on topics such as ‘Dinosaurs’ and ‘Traditional Tales’ through a range of sensory- based experiences and movement. In term 4 Sapphire’s will focus on traditional tales specifically looking at ‘The three little pigs’, looking at the characters in them and exploring the buildings they live in. This will allow pupils the opportunities to explore using all their senses and develop their experiences both in school and outside areas.
